Hay & Silage

The main difference between hay and silage is that the hay is grass cut and dried to use as animal fodder whereas silage is the fermented, green forage fodder stored in a clamp.

The moisture content of hay is not more than 16% while that in the silage is 30-60%. .. available in 5ft bales and loose. Haylage is normally 18-30%.

Hay is cut standing grass, clover, alfalfa, weeds, etc. which is dried and baled while green and growing, It makes a good treat for stock to pick through because it has nitritious leaves and seeds.

The best quality 80 × 90 meadow hay is available in lorry and trailer loads .
Big bale hay is also available for delivery in 120 ×70 / 80 × 70 or 80 × 90 bales.

Haylage

Haylage is forage that is preserved by the process of fermentation. We mow our grass in the late morning & early afternoon to ensure that it contains the highest sugar levels possible, the grass is then left to dry (wilting) for 24 - 48 hours, increasing the dry matter content from 20-25% to 55-65%.

It is then baled and wrapped in plastic to start the anaerobic fermentation process which preserves the grass, and increases the digestibility of the stored product compared to hay.

Haylage, with its higher moisture content and being virtually dust free is more palatable and easier to feed than hay, and can greatly reduce respiratory conditions. We make 3'6" long square bales, suitable for 1 to 3 horses, or 5'6" to 6' long bales for 3 or more horses.

Once opened they should last 7 - 10 days, and if kept in good dry conditions, up to 21 days. Remember GOOD haylage will last, BAD haylage will not.

Silage

Silage is pasture grass that has been 'pickled'. It is a method used to preserve the pasture for cows and sheep to eat later when natural pasture isn't good, like in the dry season.

The grasses are cut and then fermented to keep as much of the nutrients (such as sugars and proteins) as possible.

Dairy cows require lots of energy to preserve body condition and maximise milk yields. High quality silage is an abundant source of energy, protein and fibre that aids rumen health.

Not bad for a bunch of old grass, is it? In comparison to hay, silage preserves more nutrients from the original pasture.
